It is simply a vast expanse of cold blue water, capable of freezing the hide off most animals not adapted to the cold. In winter, it becomes dark here, and the occasional iceburg can be seen flaoting by, making a suitable resting spot for seals that need one. In summer it is slightly warmer, although the water temperature may drop below freezing. Long days occur here during this time, the longest of all holding no darkness at all. Krill thrive here, providing a tasty meal for baleen whales that migrate north during the summer. This area is perfect for whales. Food, company, and ample space to move, what more could you want?
